People First of Ohio

The "Just Do It Crew" is a local chapter of People First of Ohio. People First of Ohio is an organization that stands up for people with developmental disabilities to ensure equal treatment with the same rights and freedoms as those without disabilities. Advocates speak out about rights, as well as recognize the responsibilities with making decisions. People First of Ohio works with legislators and builds relationships with other advocacy groups and state agencies. There are local chapters across the state. The Allen County chapter of People First of Ohio, or "Just Do it Crew," aims to increase advocacy skills and work towards community awareness and education about developmental disabilities.

The "Just Do It Crew" meets the third Thursday of the month at Westgate Entertainment Center in Lima, Ohio from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

Advocacy Training - Project STIR

Project STIR (Steps Towards Independence and Responsibility) is a two-day seminar for people who want to become personal advocates and learn effective ways to be heard. People who advocate for personal needs and wants ultimately enjoy a higher quality of life as they have confidence, know how to properly express feelings, and are empowered to make decisions. During the seminar, people will learn about these topics and more:

  • Knowing Yourself

  • Communicating Assertively

  • Problem Solving & Negotiating

  • Rights & Responsibilities

  • Being Part of the Community

The days consist of small group discussions, role-playing, and hands-on activities. It is presented by advocates who completed additional training and have chosen to support others to become advocates.

Those that complete the two-day Project STIR sessions are invited to attend monthly "Just Do It Crew" meetings.
